The notion of "architectural ensemble" or "architectonic ensemble" is characterized by the unity of constructed architectural complexes, by correlation and interdependence of establishment proportions, as well as by the rhythm of establishments, subject to a unitary conception. A territory relief, green plantations, monumental paintings and sculptures that structure or decorate the ensemble architecture, have a very important role in the foundation of "architectural ensembles".
The notion of ensemble is totally unknown during the Middle Age with its urban constructions erected in the scientific manner. On the territory of the Republic of Moldova and Transdniestria the first architectural ensembles, which were designed in an extremely fast manner, started to come into view only in the middle of the 19th century. Thus, along with the erection of "Holy Gates" ("Triumphal Arch") by the architect Luca Zauslevici in 1814 on the same axis with the steeple establishment and cathedral in Chisinau, designed by Avraam Melnikov in the 30's of the 19th century, a principal architectural ensemble of the Republic of Moldova was constituted.
It is only in the 20th century that the following architectural ensembles were founded: "Chisinau City Gates" (architects Iu. Skvortova, A. Markovici and A. Spasov), the multi-storey buildings ensemble on Dacia Boulevard (architect G. Solominov), architectural ensemble on Alecu Russo square in Rascani quarter, Chisinau (architect V. Salaghinov), ensemble of nine-storey dwelling houses on Negruzzi Boulevard (architects M. Iospa, L. Stanisevschi, etc.). Moreover, it is worth mentioning the ensemble composed of Schmidt square and street in the city of Balti, designed by Eti Rosa Spirer, the theatrical square ensemble in Tiraspol, the square ensemble in the centre of Causeni, where the entrance gate arch and fence, founded by Ioan Glavce and located around the "Assumption of the Virgin Church" stand out against the general background.
