Rupestral monasteries and cells  Religious architecture

Rupestral Monastery "Saharna" is situated at the distance of 85 km from Chisinau. The date of monastery foundation is unknown. Certain documents refer to the year 1777, a year that coincides with the renovation of church by Hermit Bartholomew. In 1857 the monastery was again renovated and rearranged and extended in 1900 by adding an extremely original timber iconostasis. The rupestral monastery is composed of two dwellings, cells, church edifice and auxiliary spaces. It has the following dimensions: 17x5m. The monastery functions even nowadays.
