Monumental mural painting

Monumental mural painting has been initially developed in Moldova in the old capitals of the feudal state and in the framework of monasteries and cells founded by the rulers (see: "Fresco" category). The list of universal patrimony, approved by UNESCO, included churches from the north of historical Moldova - churches, which were decorated by exterior mural paintings (Probota, Humor, Moldovita, Arbore, Voronet, Rasca, Sucevita, etc.) No churches with exterior mural paintings were attested on the territory of Basarabia. However, several ensembles of monumental frescoes have been found. Thus, the oldest ensemble of mural paintings, preserved until today, is the fresco ensemble of the Assumption of the Virgin Church in the city of Causeni (1763 - 1767). Unfortunately, it should be mentioned that other ensembles of mural painting in Basarabia, such as the ones from Capriana, Rudi, Harjauca Monasteries, Chisinau Cathedral and other important churches of the Republic of Moldova either completely disappeared or were repainted in the XIX-XXth centuries.

Second half of the XXth century may be considered in the monumental art of the Republic of Moldova as a period, when a new series of genres, types and species of painting and sculpture take huge proportions. Therefore, thanks to the efforts of A. David, F. Hamuraru, Gh. Vrabie, M. Burea, Vl. Obuh etc. an imposing number of mosaics was executed in the villages and towns of the Republic of Moldova. I. Bogdesco and L. Beliaiev undertake an endeavor to reconstitute the secrets of old Renaissance Italian fresco in 1968 by painting a fresco within Chitcani Palace of Culture. F. Hamuraru may be considered as one of the most devoted promoters of stained glass art, which was absolutely unknown before in Moldova. Hence, at the beginning of the 80's he finalizes stained glass windows within Chisinau Youth Palace, Republican Clinic Hospital and "Vierul" Production Association. A. Nutovici was also very renowned in the 80's in the area of artistically processed glass. Due to their efforts artistic glass, previously limited to minor forms, takes forms of an authentic monumental and decorative art. Achievements of Luisa Iantzen in the field of decorative ceramics must be also taken into consideration. Colored ceramics compositions, executed by the aforementioned artist (in collaboration with Saakov) within the premises of Chisinau Circus and Republican Palace may be considered masterpieces of authentic monumental art.
