"En ronde bosse" monumental sculpture appeared in the Republic of Moldova later than relief art and was directly influenced by political and ideological imperatives of country governors. Thus, in Chisinau, during the Tsarist occupation (1812 - 1918) the monuments of the Russian Tsars Alexander I and Alexander II are erected. One of the first busts erected in the capital of Basarabia of that time was the one of the foremost Russian poet, Alexander Puskin, executed according to a model of the sculptor A.M. Opekusin. Monuments of the Moldovan Rulers, Stefan cel Mare (Chisinau, sculptor - A. Plamadeala, architect - E. Bernardazzi) and Vasile Lupu (Orhei, sculptor - O. Han, architect - R. Curt) are dating from the Interwar period.

The period that followed the World War II is the most prolific one in terms of erection of monumental works of art. During the 50 - 60's of the XXth century the greatest part of the so-called "engaged" art monuments is erected, which was promoted by the Communist leaders of MSSR. Therefore, within this period the equestrian statue of Grigorii Kotovski in Chisinau is unveiled - a Hero of Civil War of USSR, as well as monuments of Carl Marx (sculptor - A. Maiko), Gheorghi Dimitrov (sculptor - N. Gorionisev), monument consecrated to Young Revolutionaries (sculptor - L. Dubinovschi, architect - F. Naumov) etc. Still, the most important monumental ensemble of those years is the Alley of Classics of Romanian Literature (named in 1958, year of its inauguration, as the Alley of Classics of Moldovan Literature), an alley, initially comprising 12 busts of the greatest writers of Romanian language, which continued by unveiling of 13 more busts in the 90's of the XXth century.

The historic period, comprising years 1989 - 2000, is characterized by the revival to natural values of national culture and "de-ideologization" of monumental art from "prescriptions", previously dictated by ideologies of the so-called "scientific communism". During this period the following monuments are created: monument of Mihai Eminescu and Vasile Alecsandri (sculptors - T. Cataraga and I. Zderciuc, respectively), as well as Monument of Ghetto Victims (sculptor - N. Epelbaum, architect - S. Soihet), Monument consecrated to the Heroes Fallen during the Transdniestrian Military Conflict in 1992 (sculptor - Iu. Conasin, architect - N. Zaporojan), monuments of the poet Alexei Mateevici in the villages Zaim (sculptor - M. Ecobici and others) and in Chisinau (bust located in the Alley of Classics and in the neighborhood of the premises of House of Army), Nicolae Iorga's Bust in Chisinau (sculptor - M. Ecobici), stele dedicated to the memory of Onisifor and Octavian Goga (sculptor - Gh. Adoc), Mihai Viteazul's bust in the village of Cazangic (sculptor - Eu. Petri), bust of the poet Nicolae Costenco (sculptor - B. Dubrovin) in Chisinau and monument dedicated to the Bishop Petru Movila in the capital of Republic (sculptors - G. and B. Dubrovin, architect - C. Halupneac).
